Memory Foam Mattress

What is Memory Foam?

Memory foam Mattress

Initially invented by NASA in the 1970’s, memory foam, also known as viscoelastic, was manufactured to provide cushioning and comfort during shuttle launches. It was so well received, however, that it was soon available to the public in the form of seat cushions, shoe inserts, mattresses, and more. Dense and solid, memory foam is incredibly comfortable to sleep on, as it forms to your body’s shape with ease. The denser the foam, the higher quality the mattress. Usually made from polyurethane, these mattresses tend to have a longer lifespan than spring mattresses.

More Than One?

With the diversity in which memory foam can be used, it’s no surprise that there are different types of memory foam mattresses available on the market. To go along with the traditional mattress, there are also open cell and gel-infused foam mattress options.

Traditional

Everything we’ve talked about applies to traditional memory foam, as it’s the building block for all memory foam mattresses. Traditional foam can provide great sleep quality but often retains heat, making it uncomfortable to sleep in high-temperature environments.

Open Cell

Created as a way to fix the heat retention issue of its predecessor, open cell foam mattresses have a different internal structure. This allows for better air movement within the mattress, reducing any chance of your body overheating during the night.

Gel Infused

Lastly, gel infused foam mattresses have gel pumped into the foam to absorb any heat you may be producing. Some gel formulas are even able to regulate your temperature while you sleep, simply by absorbing and releasing heat. These mattresses are also denser than the other options, but that means they’re also more likely to degrade faster if not enough gel was initially pumped in.

Overall Advantages

It’s great for spinal alignment. The heat from your body helps mould the mattress further into your body, providing a more comfortable sleep while supporting your body’s natural alignment. It also helps in relieving joint pain and unnecessary pressure.

With a memory foam mattress, you’re less likely to feel movement from your partner getting up in the middle of the night or tossing and turning. This is because of the density within the mattress’ structure. It absorbs any movement instead of transferring it like spring mattresses tend to do. And it’s hypoallergenic! The dense structure reduces the number of dust and allergens that can build up within. Nothing will be able to find its way into your mattress.

Disadvantages

While having a dense mattress has its advantages, it can be incredibly heavy to move. One person alone probably won’t be able to lift it if readjustments are needed.

Memory foam also doesn’t do well regarding moisture, so be careful to avoid spilling anything. On top of being difficult to clean, moisture can speed of the degeneration of the bed, reducing the overall lifespan. Grabbing a waterproof mattress cover should prevent any of this from occurring.
